Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS)
The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. The extended mass layoffs program covers layoffs of at least 31 days duration that involve 50 or more individuals from a single establishment filing initial claims for unemployment insurance during a 5-week period.
Mass Layoff Statistics is a federal-state cooperative program that uses a standardized, automated approach to identify, describe, and track the effects of major job cutbacks. MLS data can be used to identify pockets of unemployed individuals so that education and training resources can be appropriately focused. In times when labor is in short supply, MLS data may be used to identify pools of recently unemployed skilled workers. The following tables provide data on demographic characteristics, reasons for, and industry distribution of layoffs for the most recent eight calendar quarters.
